Knock Out Text

Now find and open the design you want to 'knockout'. In this case I'm going to use a black and transparent version of the Silhouette School logo. (I find it MUCH easier to design when my pieces are filled in with the color - using the fill tool - of the material in which I will ultimately cut on.) You want to open the design second because you want it 'in front' of the text.

If your design is not in.studio file, but instead a JPEG you'll need to trace it to get cut lines around it. Place the design over the text where you want it.

For example, you can use a text layer to knock out a color adjustment layer and reveal a portion of the image using the original colors. As you plan your knockout effect, you need to decide which layer will create the shape of the knockout, which layers will be punched through, and which layer will be revealed. There are a couple of ways to do knockout text (text that appears cut out, such that you can see a background behind it) on the web. There is one fairly new way that has pretty decent browser support that is pretty interesting. But let's cover all the ground.

If you'd like it exactly centered, use the to get it perfect! Now that you know how to design a Silhouette knockout design you need to cut it. But how you cut it will depend on what you're cutting it on.and that deserves a tutorial of it's own! I'll have part 2 of the Silhouette knockout method on the blog next week.
